MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – FINAL

NICA partners with EMOTIV to leverage human emotion in the design of cities of longevity.

Newcastle upon Tyne, UK – The UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) has partnered with neuro-informatics company EMOTIV to explore the connection between emotions and longevity through technology.

Following the launch of its City of Longevity toolkit, which aims to provide global cities with a new framework for promoting healthy longevity, NICA is working with EMOTIV to actively involve people in the design of better cities, services, products and experiences.

The partnership will be formalised under a high-visibility pilot project called ‘Project City Vibes’, which will see NICA harness the potential of EMOTIV’s groundbreaking smart headphones, the MN8, to measure brain activity (EEG) in the real world while minimising the impact on user experience.

EMOTIV is one the world’s most trusted neurotechnology companies and has advanced the measurement of mental states with its machine learning algorithms. EMOTIV systems use AI to translate the EEG data measured from the MN8 smart headphones to provide real-time metrics on stress, attention, and cognitive load.

As part of Project City Vibes, NICA will deploy the MN8 to collect the cognitive responses of residents and tourists in specific urban and cultural settings, gaining a deeper understanding of how people respond to diverse stimuli throughout their environment.

The project will capture critical data to inform two of NICA’s core programmes – the Internet of Caring Things and the City of Longevity – providing tangible information about how cities and organisations can become proactive promoters of the longevity of citizens and customers via day-to-day touchpoints.

The insights uncovered by the project will be transformed into a series of tools and recommendations for policy makers and industry, potentially revolutionising the way we co-design meaningful and enjoyable experiences.

Professor Nic Palmarini, Director of NICA, said: “In today’s society, there is a growing realisation that wellbeing and health are not limited to the absence of disease or discomfort but encompass a broad sphere of internal and external factors.

“This partnership with EMOTIV will help us understand the impact of architecture, art and culture on the cognitive state of residents and tourists, providing a critical dataset from which we can formalise our toolkit and recommendations for civic and cultural leaders who are committed to building healthier communities.”

Project City Vibes will be piloted over a two-month period, using EMOTIV’s cutting edge technology to collect, analyse and interpret crowdsourced data.

The pilot will position Newcastle upon Tyne as a test bed for measuring citizen experience and engagement, demonstrating the importance of “good vibes” in terms of wellbeing and longevity.

Sage Gateshead has signed up as a strategic partner of the pilot and will open up access to the award-winning international music venue for the NICA team to put EMOTIV’s innovative technology to the test.

Abigail Pogson, Managing Director of Sage Gateshead, said: “Each year, we welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors from a diverse range of backgrounds and it’s incredibly important to us that they have a positive experience because Sage is for everyone.

“Working with NICA on this pilot will allow us to better understand how people feel when they come into the centre, and we look forward to learning more about how we can support healthy ageing and longevity through our wider delivery.”

NICA hopes the pilot will serve as a foundation for future research and development, enabling cities to continually refine their approaches and offerings to meet the evolving needs of residents and visitors.

Kim Old, Chief Commercial Officer of EMOTIV, said: “The correlation between cognitive health and environment has been documented in countless studies across decades of research. Project City Vibes is an exciting first step toward using brain data-driven insights for building more responsive, adaptive and human centred city infrastructures.

“In partnering with NICA and Newcastle upon Tyne, we’ll be able to identify how the cities in which we live and work contribute to our cognitive health and well-being and apply that towards changes that promote a healthy future.”

If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that change can happen at any time and affect us in significant ways. Whilst it’s not easy to see at times, each and every challenge we face means we are building our mental capacity by being more agile and resilient.

Opportunities to increase our mental capacity can occur through increased awareness and having the right tools available. By partnering with EMOTIV, you can create an individualized approach to mental resilience and agility. EMOTIV’s electroencephalograph (EEG) technology can do what we humans are notoriously bad at—assessing our own stress levels and cognitive limits, helping us improve our resilience.

Imagine being in a position where you were aware of all the things impacting your mental capacity. EMOTIV can help!

Mental agility

Understanding your stress levels and periods of focus can help you increase your resilience: knowing when to take a break while you’re working can help you reduce stress. In turn, this not only improves your resilience at work but also outside of work.

The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”  Nelson Mandela

How agile are you? Agility means your ability to adjust your mind to new circumstances, and quickly shift between a laser focus and the bigger picture. Examples of agility include:

  • F1 teams who move and respond quickly to different conditions at races.
  • Those responding to natural disasters—where significant coordination of effort is required by individuals in conjunction with government agencies, emergency services, and community based organizations.
  • Responding to significant personal or business challenges during the pandemic, which required people to work from home and businesses to adapt to remain viable.

We need agility to thrive in the disruptive and somewhat unknown futures that we face.

Resilience

When faced with adversity, do you break or bounce back? If you accept that life is uncertain and through uncertainty, you will grow as an individual, this is a great start to building your resilience. By developing a resilient and all-around positive approach in your life, you will have the emotional strength and adapt to difficult situations.

How resilient are you?

Resilience is that quality that allows some people to be knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever. Rather than letting failure overcome them and drain their reserves, resilient people find a way to rise from the ashes.

Psychologists have identified some factors that make someone resilient: including a positive attitude, optimism, the ability to regulate emotions, and the ability to see failure as a form of helpful feedback. Despite the misfortune, resilient people are blessed with an outlook that enables them to change course and soldier on.

If you take time to reflect on your life so far, what would you consider is your level of resilience? The Resilence Shield, an approach outlined by very experienced SAS soldiers, indicates that you can assess your resilience across a number of areas, including Innate, Mind, Body, Social, Professional, and Adaptation layers.

You can understand your own resilience by taking the Resilience Shield survey. The results indicate areas of focus and change to build your resilience. For example, a low score in the social layer means you should invest more time with your family and friends.

Overall, it is good to recognize the great things you have done and then consider what you could do differently to build your resilience.

Resilience and Failure

In many of his books, Sir Richard Branson has indicated that how resilient people deal with failure sets apart successful people from everyone else. “Failure is one of the secrets to success since some of the best ideas arise from the ashes of a shuttered business,” he explains. The strongest entrepreneurs and leaders are the ones who have experienced a few failures and have proven their resilience in the face of adversity. “Resilience is one of the hallmarks of an entrepreneur who can stay in business in the long term,” Branson argues.

Build your resilience

There are numerous examples of individuals who are an inspiration in building resilience. Louis Zamperini was a World War II prisoner of war, an Olympic athlete, an inspirational figure, and writer. Born in January 1917 in Olean, New York, and raised in California, Zamperini joined the track team in high school. Excelling at long-distance events, Zamperini competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He was ready to compete again in the 1940 Tokyo Olympics. However, World War II broke out, and the Games were canceled.

A bombardier in the Army Air Corps, Zamperini was in a plane that went down. When he arrived on shore in Japan 47 days later, he was taken as a prisoner of war and tortured for two years. After his release, Zamperini became an inspirational figure, and his life served as the basis for the 2014 biography Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.

Another example of how extreme resilience is built into individuals is Australia’s Special Air Services Regiment (SASR). The regiment was established after World War II out of a need for smaller teams to work outside normal military operations. The characteristics of the SASR soldier remain unchanged: emotional and physical resilience and mental toughness. But what sets them apart is their extreme psychological resilience and their unique cognitive ability.

SASR soldiers are subject to the toughest, most gruelling selection process known. “In short we try and deconstruct a person down to their bare humanity,” By using techniques such as sleep deprivation and food deprivation you can really strip back a person and see their levels of resilience and levels of cognitive ability. The end result is a handpicked, highly homogenous group of soldiers trained to handle the most gruelling and complex military operations.

Build resilience with EMOTIV

Your brain is the most complex part of your body. Scientists have learned more about the brain in the last 10 years than in all previous centuries because of the accelerating pace of research and the availability of neurotechnology. EMOTIV’s technology can do what we all want to do — support you in increasing your resilience.

Using the inspiring examples quoted previously and EMOTIV’s EEG technology, you can build your own capability and resilience to adversity using a combination of physical and mental techniques. The following tips will support you on the journey:

  • Develop an optimistic view of the world.
  • Learn from the best about models of resilience.
  • Consider that there is not one single path to success.
  • Take time to think about all you have learned from a mistake or a failure.
  • Going back to basics, test yourself emotionally and physically to build your capability.
  • Ensure a well-rounded approach to life with balance in all areas.
  • Build in your approach with EMOTIV.

EMOTIV’s technology empowers you to better understand your brain, giving an “insider’s view” of how your brain reacts to certain events during your day.

EMOTIV’s technology measures EEG data from the brain and analyzes it to derive insights about brain function, providing meaning to certain events and conditions.  By harnessing the power of your brain with EMOTIV’s technology and brain insights, you can optimize your day and build resilience.

EMOTIV is a recognized pioneer and market leader in the field of BCI enterprise solutions and EEG technology. Its award-winning EMOTIV EPOC+ headset and the 10-year anniversary edition EPOC X provide professional-grade BCI data for academic research and commercial use.

Founded on a belief in the capacity for interaction and engagement to harness the power of togetherness, Mentimeter unlocks the potential of presenters and audiences in a way that traditional presentation tools simply cannot.

Mentimeter always had a ‘hunch’ that their presentation platform was more engaging than their rivals – something they dubbed ‘The Mentimeter Effect’ – but until they partnered with EMOTIV, they had no way of quantifying it. Mentimeter approached EMOTIV’s Research Service to independently conduct an EEG (electroencephalography) research project measuring participants’ brain activity while viewing and interacting with two presentations: Mentimeter vs. Powerpoint.

Do you ever feel like your life is chaotic? Life can feel very busy and fast-paced, and there’s always something that easily grabs our attention and distracts us from what we’re doing.  Today we receive so many alerts, messages, emails, and phone calls; it’s no wonder why we see so many people glued to their smartphones. In fact, I am sure you may have noticed people walking across pedestrian crossings while looking at their phones. It’s great to see that they make it to the other side without any mishaps!

Technology is amazing, and due to visionaries like Steve Jobs, we have information at our fingertips and amazing connections globally. Steve Jobs was a pioneer in technology., working with a driven passion for revolutionizing the digital world. However, do you sometimes feel that you are “caught up” in it all and have no time to build your success?

When thinking about your future success, it’s important to note some of the great visionaries, like Steve Jobs, and how they achieved success, their lessons, and how they made a difference in the world. You can then apply relevant considerations to your life. Doing this will build approaches in your life for future success through a great foundation that will serve you and others for a lifetime. So, would you like the opportunity to create your own success formula now?

Your Journey Now

We are all on different journeys in life. However, the opportunity is available for you to choose what path to take and your ultimate destiny. There is no need for you to live an unrewarding life. If you could live your dream instead of accepting whatever you are given, imagine for a minute, what that would be like.

Your time on this earth is meant to be an adventurous and rewarding journey, full of love, joy, happiness and abundance—the best that life has to offer. For some this could be starting an exciting new business, seeking a promotion, trekking the Himalayas, or in some cases, just having time out of a hectic routine to relax. However, you may need to make some changes in your life to achieve your ambitions, resulting in freedom and liberation.

What if you could Commit, Create and Connect across all fields in the creative space to harness and bring about change?

What is your life about?

Now is a good time to reflect on your life. Are you satisfied with the progress you are making, or do you need to change your destiny in some way? Perhaps you’re feeling frustrated or ‘stuck’ in life!

Discovering what your life is about is an opportunity for you to know who and what you are meant to become. Changing your destiny is about seeking happiness, which could be material possessions, spiritual enlightenment, or being a service to humanity. Quite often this can come down to knowing what is important to you and what drives you.

So, find some quiet time and begin answering the big questions of your life. For example:

  • What inspires you?
  • What makes you feel great?
  • What are you naturally good at?
  • What are you passionate about?
  • If you had to teach something, what would that be?

Keep your answers in a book that’s easy to access and update: it will be a source of sustaining you and a way toto measure your growth through life. Overall, your destiny is something that makes you feel useful. It inspires you and gives you satisfaction.

An excellent book by Viktor Frankl, called Man’s Search for Meaning, offers us all an avenue to greater meaning and purpose in our own lives. Viktor Frankl, developed Logotherapy: The Theory of Meaning. Frankl viewed logotherapy as a way to enhance existing therapies by emphasizing the “meaning-dimension” or spiritual dimension of human beings. Three philosophical and psychological concepts make up Frankl’s logotherapy: freedom of will, will to meaning, and meaning of life.

Are you feeling stressed? Is there too much on your plate with deadlines looming, people counting on you, and to top it off, you’re too busy to arrange a well-deserved holiday that would help you relax? The result is not surprising: you feel under pressure and your quality of life is suffering!

With the fast-paced, high-pressure lives that many of us lead with demanding jobs and family responsibilities, it’s no wonder that we sometimes feel stressed to the limit. However, not all stress is bad. It often protects us by priming our bodies to react quickly to adverse situations. It also ensures that we push ourselves to be the best we can be: who wouldn’t want that?

The problem in modern times, however, is that our body’s stress response is regularly triggered even though our lives are not in danger.  Over time, this chronic exposure to stress hormones can damage our bodies and our mental well-being.

The perception of stress is highly individualized though: what may stretch your friend’s nerves may not phase you in the least, and vice versa. In other words, what matters most is not what happens to you, but how you react to what happens to you.

How does Stress affect you?

Stress is often caused by situations we are personally experiencing or events that may be occurring in the wider world. Your mind reacts to these thought processes through an instinctive stress response known as ‘fight or flight’. Your body stores energy related to the stress that you are experiencing, and over time, it can then show up as various ailments, such as tight shoulders, sore backs, etc.

The more often we are exposed to these stressors, the more overactive our fight or flight response becomes until we find ourselves operating at a fever pitch level. Then we’re constantly prepared for battle and perceive potential threats everywhere. That’s why when someone is over-stressed, they not only show physiological symptoms such as high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, or shallow fast breath; they can seem overly sensitive or aggressive.

Today, many of us don’t do enough physical exercise to ‘burn off’ the effects of our stress response, leaving us with a stress build-up. We may learn to control our reactions, but this does not counteract the stress response.

So, consider the following:

  • How does stress affect you, i.e. physically and emotionally?
  • What does stress mean to you?
  • What is the cause of your stress?
  • How often does it occur?
  • How do you deal with it?

We all have stressful days, however, it’s important to note how often these days occur and to what degree. If your stressful days are often (say up to 7-8 on a scale, with 10 being the highest), then it may rob you of enjoying the day (and your life in general). If that is the case,  it’s important to reflect on the sources of stress and develop strategies to help manage each stressor.

For example, if you have to give a presentation, the right amount of stress helps you concentrate on preparation and rehearsal, enabling you to deliver your presentation perfectly while being fully alert and calm. If you’re thrown into the deep end with little preparation time, you can feel very stressed out about it. During the presentation, you may stammer and pause, become flustered, lose your place and maybe even panic.

You might be stressed at work due to a conflict with a co-worker or your boss, or maybe you have too much work to do. Perhaps, you’re worried about your children? Or, tensions you’ve been having with your spouse? We are all human and we all get impacted by stress. However, it is important to ensure that our stress level does not soar off the chart.

In the article, How to turn Everyday Stress into Optimal Stress, Jan Asher et al. discuss that the purpose of stress is to help us solve problems and to grow from our experiences.  If you have too much stress in your life, how can you reduce it so that you don’t reach a crisis point, such as quitting your job in anger, or breaking up with your partner? It is often helpful to include self-care practices, such as exercise, relaxation, or a walk in nature, into your routine, to help you balance work with your personal life.

Consider a broader view

If you’re feeling that stress is having an impact on your life, try taking a step out of your current situation and look at your life more broadly. , For example:

  • Think about the ‘Big Picture’. This can be very energizing when you’re stressed and facing challenges because you are linking a small action to a greater meaning or purpose.
  • See everything in terms of progress, not perfection. When you have a perfection mindset, you always expect to do everything just right and you constantly (often unconsciously) compare yourself to other people, to see how you ‘size up’.
  • Have self-compassion. A dose of self-compassion, when things are at their most difficult, can reduce your stress and improve your performance. Consider the effect of other people on your life. It is important to involve yourself in things that are only in your control.
  • Talk to a friend or partner about what is making you feel stressed. Sharing often helps you process the stress and get it off your chest.

Increase your awareness

Childhood experiences, conditioning, family issues, or concern about the future can set up our behaviour patterns on how we handle certain situations. It is important to note which aspects are preventing us from changing.

And remember, Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone. Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived. Live in the present and make it amazing” Anon

A great step for managing stress is to create change by increasing your awareness of your mental well-being and being in the present moment.

A very simple and effective way of identifying stress during your day is with an EMOTIV brain monitoring headset.  EMOTIV has created technology that will help you identify stress while you’re working, even before you recognize it yourself.  You can wear an EMOTIV headset in the office or while working from home where we all experience stressful situations: like our computers crashing, losing unsaved work, or being unable to log in.

With EMOTIV headsets you gain accurate insights into your cognitive and emotional states in real time through electroencephalography (EEG). This technology can help you manage stress and optimize your day.

EMOTIV as your Virtual Coach

Using the principles of neurofeedback, with an EMOTIV headset, you can have your own personalized virtual coach. The headsets and workplace wellness app help you better understand yourself by identifying stress and times of focus while you’re working.

With EMOTIV’s help, you can manage stress better by also using the following tips:

  • Define and plan for success.
  • See everything in terms of progress, not perfection.
  • Have self-compassion.
  • Get physical, relax, and breathe slowly.
  • Find your motivation.
  • Demonstrate commitment to reducing stress by saying “no”.
  • Consider other people, situations, and circumstances outside of yourself through some form of contribution: broader perspectives can alter how we view our stress when we consider other people’s stress.

Understanding stress can lead to optimal performance with EMOTIV by your side. And, optimizing your day has a cyclical effect: when you feel less stressed at work, you’ll also feel an improvement in your personal life.
